Blog post.

Some people pass through our lives lightly, and then there are the ones who leave a quiet imprint you feel at the oddest moments. A song. A sentence. A memory you didn’t ask for but don’t really want to lose.

On My Mind and in My Heart makes distance feel both impossible and strangely bearable, because the connection itself refuses to fade.

What I’ve heard from readers this month is that they recognize that feeling, the slow burn, the unfinished sentence, the way someone can stay present in your thoughts long after the moment has passed. It’s not dramatic. It’s not cinematic. It’s intimate in an almost private way, even from yourself.

That’s what I wanted to capture: two people trying to navigate a bond that doesn’t fit neatly into their lives but won’t disappear either. A connection that’s tender, complicated, and real in the way real feelings often are.

So here’s my May reflection: some people stay with us not because we hold on to them, but because something in the connection holds on to us. And maybe that’s not something to fight. Maybe it’s something to understand.

If you’ve read the book, thank you for letting these characters sit with you for a while. If you haven’t yet, and you’ve ever had someone who lived quietly in the back of your mind, this story might feel familiar.

Behind the Letters: Why "On My Mind and in My Heart" Isn't a Typical Romance

When I first started putting together the letters that make up my book, I knew I was writing about love. But as the manuscript took shape, I realized I needed to make something clear to you, my readers.

This is a love story, not a romance.

I know, it’s a subtle distinction.

When we think of a "romance novel," we often expect a specific formula: two people meet, face conflict, and ultimately end up in a guaranteed happily-ever-after. There is absolutely nothing wrong with that. I love a good romance! But that’s not what On My Mind and in My Heart is.

Set in 1998, this story is told entirely through letters, emails, and notes. It’s about the raw longing, the slow-burning emotional intimacy, and the painful distance of a long-distance relationship.

• It’s a love story because it focuses on the internal world of the characters, the way they learn to love through the written word, and the sacrifices they make for that feeling.

• It’s not a romance because this story doesn't follow a pre-planned path. It is messy, it is real, and the chaotic, unscripted nature of life and distance governs it.

I wrote this for anyone who has ever poured their soul into a letter, who has loved someone deeply despite insurmountable miles, and who knows that love is less about the final destination and more about the journey of holding someone in your mind and in your heart.

I hope you enjoy stepping back into 1998 with me.

Warmly,

Gabrielle A.

March has arrived, that strange mix of cold mornings and hopeful afternoons. I always find myself waking up a little earlier this time of year, as if my mind knows spring is on its way before the calendar does.

I’ve been thinking about that as I work on my current project. Some days the writing comes easily; other days it feels like walking through fog. But progress is progress, even when it’s slow, especially when it’s slow.

It’s also easy to overlook how far we’ve come. We wait for big milestones, finishing a draft, publishing a book, but so much of the creative life happens in the quiet, steady work no one sees. March feels like a good time to appreciate the pages that didn’t exist last month, and to honor the courage it takes to keep going.

If you’re on your own creative or personal journey, I hope this month brings a little momentum, a little light, and maybe even a surprise or two.

February always sneaks up on me. It’s short, a little uneven, and somehow still manages to feel like a turning point. Maybe it’s the cold. Maybe it’s the way the light hangs on a little longer each afternoon. Or maybe it’s the fact that this is the month when people start talking about love again.
Not the loud kind. The small, steady versions.

The way someone remembers how you take your coffee.
The text that arrives at the exact moment you need it.

Those are the moments I’ve been paying attention to lately. The ones that don’t make a scene but still shift something inside you. They’re easy to overlook, but once you notice them, they stay with you.
So that’s my intention for this month: pay attention.
Not to the noise, but to the warmth of ordinary things.

If you find a moment like that, even just one, I hope you let yourself keep it.
And since we’re here in the middle of February, I’ll say it simply: Happy Valentine’s Day, in whatever way the day finds you.

There’s something about October that invites a slower kind of breath. The leaves don’t fall; they release. The light doesn’t fade; it softens. And in that hush, I find myself returning to the novel, not as its author, but as its witness.
This season, the story feels different. More tender. More earned.

The emotional arc of the book now mirrors the trees outside my window; what once burned bright now curls inward, asking to be held. If you’ve read it, you know the moment I'm referring to. That is a turning point. That quiet grief.

Promotions are coming, but they’ll be gentle. A $0.99 offering on Amazon for the e-book, timed with the waning moon from October 9th to October 13th. No urgency. Just an invitation to sit with the story as the world slows down.

Reader rituals matter more than metrics. I’ve been refining blurbs, bookmarks, and even ad copy to make them feel like a whisper rather than a shout. If you stumble across it, I want it to feel like fate.

If you’ve read the book, I’d love to know: What line stayed with you when the leaves began to turn? What moment felt like a mirror?

And if you haven’t yet, October is a good time to begin. The ember waits.
